Department

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

Fillings, root canal treatment and saving damaged teeth.

About the department

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is concerned with saving natural teeth. Conservative dentistry restores teeth damaged by decay, wear or injury, while endodontics treats the dental pulp, the living tissue inside the tooth, when it is inflamed or infected. Root canal treatment, the best-known endodontic procedure, allows a tooth that would otherwise be extracted to stay in the mouth and keep working.

The department teaches undergraduate students how to diagnose dental caries and pulp disease, and how to restore teeth with fillings and root canal treatment. It also trains postgraduate students for the MDS degree in this specialty, who treat patients under the supervision of the faculty and carry out research for their dissertations.

Treatments offered

  • Tooth-coloured fillingsFillings that match the colour of your teeth.
  • Root canal treatmentTreats an infected or badly decayed tooth, so it can be kept.
  • Re-treatment of root canalsFor a root-canal-treated tooth that is still giving trouble.
  • Treatment of broken teethRepairs chipped and broken teeth, including after an injury.
  • Tooth whiteningLightens stained or discoloured teeth.
  • VeneersThin covers that improve the look of front teeth.

Many of our patients come from the villages around the college, often hoping to save a painful tooth rather than lose it. We treat them with modern root canal and restorative techniques, and teach our students to judge carefully which teeth can be saved and how to save them well.
