Oral Medicine and Radiology
The first stop for every patient: examination, X-rays, diagnosis, and treatment of mouth conditions.
About the department
Oral Medicine and Radiology deals with the diagnosis of diseases of the mouth and jaws, and with the medical, non-surgical treatment of many of them. This includes oral ulcers, white and red patches, conditions of the oral mucosa, disorders of the jaw joint, and facial pain. Oral radiology uses X-rays and other imaging to examine the teeth and jaws.
In this college, the department is where every new patient is first examined. Each patient’s history is taken, the mouth is examined, X-rays are taken where needed, and the patient is then treated here or referred to the department that can treat them. The department also screens patients, especially tobacco users, for early signs of oral cancer.
Undergraduate students learn history taking, clinical examination and the taking and reading of dental radiographs here. It also trains postgraduate students for the MDS degree in this specialty, who treat patients under the supervision of the faculty and carry out research for their dissertations.
