About the department
Oral Pathology and Microbiology is the study of the causes, processes and effects of diseases of the mouth and jaws. Oral pathologists examine tissue, cells and other samples under the microscope to identify a disease, and their reports guide the treatment given by the clinical departments.
The department teaches undergraduate students the structure of the teeth and oral tissues (oral histology), general and oral pathology, and microbiology. Its laboratory examines biopsies and other samples from patients treated in the clinical departments of the college. Tests are done on the request of the treating doctor, so patients come to the laboratory through the department that is treating them.

Our laboratory supports every clinical department in the college: a biopsy examined with care settles a diagnosis and guides the treatment that follows. We teach our students how disease looks at its source, a grounding they carry into every branch of dentistry.
