Department
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Tooth removal, wisdom teeth, jaw injuries and surgery of the face and jaws.
About the department
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the surgical specialty of dentistry. It covers the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face: from the removal of teeth to the treatment of facial fractures, cysts and tumours of the jaws, and the correction of jaw deformities.
The department teaches undergraduate students local anaesthesia, the extraction of teeth and the principles of surgery and of managing medical emergencies in the dental chair. It also trains postgraduate students for the MDS degree in this specialty, who treat patients under the supervision of the faculty and carry out research for their dissertations. The department works closely with the other dental departments, and with the medical hospital on the campus for patients who need admission or general anaesthesia.
