About the department
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the specialty concerned with the growth of the face and jaws, and with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of irregular teeth and bites. Treatment uses fixed braces, clear aligners and removable appliances to move teeth, and, in growing children, appliances that guide the growth of the jaws.
The department teaches undergraduate students how the face and jaws grow, how to recognise problems of the teeth and bite, and when to refer a patient for orthodontic treatment. It also trains postgraduate students for the MDS degree in this specialty, who treat patients under the supervision of the faculty and carry out research for their dissertations.

We straighten teeth and correct bites for children and adults, using fixed braces, clear aligners and appliances that guide a growing child's jaws. Families travel to us from across the region, and we teach our students to plan each case carefully, because good orthodontic results are planned long before they are seen.
