Department

Periodontology

Gum care: bleeding gums, loose teeth and gum disease.

About the department

Periodontology is the study of the periodontium, the tissues that support the teeth: the gums, the bone around the teeth and the ligament that holds them in place. Periodontal disease, which begins as bleeding gums and can end in loose teeth, is one of the most common diseases of the mouth, and is linked with general health conditions such as diabetes.

The department teaches undergraduate students how to examine the gums, how to remove the deposits that cause gum disease, and how to teach patients to care for their gums at home. It also trains postgraduate students for the MDS degree in this specialty, who treat patients under the supervision of the faculty and carry out research for their dissertations. Its clinical work includes gum surgery and the placement of dental implants.

Treatments offered

  • Cleaning and scalingRemoves deposits that cause bleeding gums and bad breath.
  • Treatment of gum diseaseDeep cleaning and care for swollen, bleeding or receding gums.
  • Gum surgeryFor advanced gum disease that cleaning alone can't treat.
  • Treatment of receding gumsCovers exposed roots and reduces sensitivity.
  • Splinting loose teethSupports teeth that have become loose.
  • Dental implantsFixed replacements for missing teeth, set in the jawbone.

Gum disease is one of the most common conditions we see, and it is closely linked with diabetes and other general health problems. We treat it at every stage, from deep cleaning to gum surgery and implants, and teach our students to explain to every patient how to keep their gums healthy at home.
